“Music and Culture: An Italian Perspective” at Chapman University’s Musco Center for the Arts – Feb. 11

Everyone is invited to a special event titled Music and Culture: An Italian Perspective taking place at the new Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Presented by the Chapman Italian Studies Department, the event celebrates Italian music and culture by exploring the beauty and complexity of Italy’s cultural and artistic import, will bring together faculty, staff and students from Chapman University and other local schools, as well as the broader local community of Southern California.
Music and Culture: An Italian Perspective will be a unique opportunity to understand and appreciate the cultural significance and influence of Italian music throughout the ages. A group of distinguished scholars of Italian Studies will guide us through a fascinating journey beginning in the Middle Ages (discussing influences on Dante’s Divine Comedy), continuing through the Italian Renaissance and today’s regional cultures. The symposium will include representative music examples from different periods and parts of the Italian peninsula as well as feature the unique performance of the Sicilian worldview as expressed by authentic popular songs from the island.
The event promises to be a powerful educational experience with significant cultural breadth, an event blending lecture and music appreciation, stimulating the mind and the heart.
