On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2017, the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles co-present the annual public reading of the names of the Italian Jewish victims a commemoration ceremony honoring Al Finci, Holocaust survivor and a screening of “Perlasca. The Courage of a Just Man” directed by Alberto Negrin.
On the 25th anniversary of the death of Giorgio Perlasca (1910 – 1992), the movie tells the true story of the Italian businessman who, with the collaboration of official diplomats, posed as the Spanish Consul General to Hungary in the winter of 1944, and saved 5218 Jews from deportation to Nazi Germany death camps in eastern Europe. After the war, Perlasca returned to Italy and did not talk about his actions in Hungary to anyone, including his family, for almost 40 years.
