Every year, women of all ages in Italy have this special day dedicated to them with celebratory dinners or they just get together with other female friends. Known globally as International Women’s Day, in Italy the festival has some wonderful traditions. The official Italian symbol is the yellow mimosa flower which men give to the special women in their lives. Italian feminists chose the mimosa as a symbol of the holiday in 1946, soon after the end of World War II. It was chosen for its bright, cheerful color and fragrant scent, plus it is in bloom in March and is relatively inexpensive. Men and women express best wishes – AUGURI! to any woman they encounter.
