Join Dr. Erika Nadir during this one-hour free virtual workshop as she illustrates how Italian opera was the sex, drugs, and rock & roll of its time. Find out what all the fuss is about as Dr. Nadir traces the historic roots of this most elemental and exciting art form and decodes some of the most influential arias from the Baroque to the present.
Dr. Nadir was an opera singer for 17 years in New York, and besides singing the traditional canon, she appeared in three American premieres. Dr. Nadir received her PhD in Italian Literature at UCLA in 2017 and has lectured on the intersection of Italian opera and cinema in London, New York, and at various conferences across the United States.

Join NIAF to experience the sights and sounds of Il Palio di Siena, a four-day cultural sporting extravaganza, culminates in the world’s most thrilling horse race. Witness the crowds that mob the Piazza del Campo leading up to the race as processions of the Contrade bedecked in armor and silk transform the city into a spectacle right out of the Cinquecento. Register for “Pride Passion and Pandemonium: Il Palio di Siena” to virtually experience the Palio’s colorful pageantry virtually through stunning photographs as author, lecturer and photographer, Carla Gambescia, explores with you the race’s fascinating history and traditions. Carla Gambescia is the author of La Dolce Vita University: An Unconventional Guide to Italian Culture from A to Z, Silver Prize winner of “Best Travel Book of the Year” awarded by the North American Travel Journalists Association. A regular lecturer on topics of Italian cultural interest, Carla has written about and toured every region of Italy on foot or by bicycle and curates the photoblog Postcards from the Boot. Carla conceived and co-led the Giro del Gelato bicycle tour winner of OUTSIDE Magazine’s “Best Trip in Western Europe,” and, for a decade, owned and operated Via Vanti! Restaurant & Gelateria in Mount Kisco, NY.
